Rising Crime in 2024: What It Means for Your Business Security

27 Jan 2025

The harsh reality of South Africa's security situation hit close to home for many businesses last year, and 2025's crime forecasts suggest even tougher challenges ahead. From the spike in armed robberies at retail stores in Gauteng to sophisticated warehouse break-ins in the Western Cape, 2024 showed us that traditional security measures aren't enough anymore.

"I remember one incident at around 3 AM, about an attempted break-in at one of our client's sites," says Adriaan Otto, Managing Director of Excellerate Services. "Our tactical team was there in 8 minutes. That's the difference between reading about security threats in the news and actually dealing with them on the ground."

Over the past year, we've learned that security isn't just about posting guards at entrances anymore. Modern criminals are sophisticated, well-organised, and quick to exploit weaknesses. That's why we've developed strategies that are a combination of human expertise and technology that work together to protect businesses.

What does this look like in practice?

Our security officers don't just stand guard, they're connected to our control rooms 24/7, with real-time support and intelligence at their fingertips. When a guard at a shopping center spots suspicious activity, they can instantly alert our tactical response team while accessing live camera feeds to track movement.

We've also expanded our specialised units and intelligence to meet specific threats:

A K9 unit, which recently helped uncover a major drug smuggling operation alongside the SAPS in a Durban Neighbourhood.

A tactical team that has been crucial in rapid response situations, particularly during social unrests. December 2024 alone saw 177 incidents nationwide, 145 protest actions, 29 protest marches, and three strike actions. Our teams were on the ground protecting businesses and staff through some of these events.

Strategic Partnership with TopicWorx allowing us to spot new threats quickly and aiding us in operational efficiency.

But perhaps most importantly, we believe in prevention through intelligence. Our analysts study crime patterns which assist us in taking the necessary preventative steps, for example, if we notice a spike in hijackings at a particular area for instance, we can immediately adapt our security protocols. It's this kind of proactive response that helps our clients stay one step ahead of potential threats.

"Security isn't about fancy equipment or making grand promises," Otto adds. "It's about understanding the real threats your business faces and having people on the ground who know exactly what to do when something happens. That's what keeps me up at night, making sure we're always one step ahead."

Whether you're currently working with us or looking to strengthen your security, we're here to help protect what you've built. The threats are real, but so are the solutions.
