19 Nov 2024

As Black Friday approaches on November 29, 2024, shopping centers across South Africa will be buzzing with activity as shoppers hunt for the best deals. While the excitement is undeniable, this is also a time when opportunistic crimes tend to increase.

As a security company with extensive experience safeguarding client sites during high-traffic periods, we’ve seen firsthand how easily distractions and oversights can lead to incidents. To help you stay one step ahead, we’ve compiled these essential safety tips to ensure your Black Friday experience is secure and enjoyable.

It’s important to take the following precautions so that you don’t fall prey to criminals:

Secure Your Belongings

Always ensure your handbag is zipped, and avoid carrying cellphones or wallets in your back pocket. These are prime targets for pickpockets.

Keep Your Trolley in Sight

Never leave your shopping trolley unattended, especially if it contains valuables like handbags or electronics. This includes when using the restroom, always keep your trolley close and within view.

When Dining

Refrain hanging your bag over the chair, or placing your cellphone or wallet on tables while dining. A moment’s distraction is all it takes for someone to grab your belongings.

Be Mindful in Crowded Spaces

Criminals often target distracted individuals, especially in crowded spaces like elevators and queues, where close proximity makes it easier for pickpockets to strike. Stay alert to your surroundings and keep your belongings close at all times.

Be Alert When Drawing Cash

ATM are hotspots for criminals. If you must draw cash ensure that you choose a ATM that has a visible security presence.

Parking lots attract criminal activity during busy shopping days:

Double-Check That Your Vehicle is Locked

When using a remote, physically check that all doors are securely locked. Thieves often use jamming devices to prevent locks from engaging.

Avoid Storing Purchases in Your Car

If you must leave items in your vehicle, make sure they are out of sight and do not linger near your car after stowing them.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Keep an eye out for suspicious individuals loitering in the parking lot. Report any concerns to mall security immediately.

Once you’ve completed your Black Friday shopping spree, remember to stay vigilant even on your way home. Be aware of smash-and-grab incidents at traffic lights, criminals often target vehicles where valuables or newly bought items are visible. Ensure all your purchases and personal belongings are stored out of sight.

At home, maintaining security is equally important. Disposing of packaging wisely can help prevent unwanted attention. Large appliance boxes, such as those for TVs or microwaves, can signal to criminals what new valuables are inside your home. To avoid advertising your purchases and becoming a potential target for house robbery, cut up the boxes and dispose of them properly.

Black Friday is an exciting time to score deals and celebrate the festive season. By staying alert and following these tips, you can ensure a safer shopping experience for yourself and your loved ones.

If you notice any suspicious activity, remember that mall security teams are always available to assist. Let’s work together to keep this Black Friday safe and enjoyable for everyone.
