With persistently high crime rates, and alarming statistics that show that violent crime shows little chance of abating in the foreseeable future, there is an urgent need for all South Africans to heighten their security awareness and take additional measures to ensure personal safety.
We have compiled some essential tips to help you stay safe:
1. Stay Aware and Alert
Remain constantly aware of your surroundings especially when you find yourself in unfamiliar places. Be on the lookout for strange people and cars, it may save your life.
2. Home Security Measures
Invest in reliable safety measures to secure your home, this could be through installing an alarm system, security cameras or becoming a member of a security services company.
3. Self Defence Classes and Additional Safety
Consider taking self-defence classes to build your confidence or even subscribe to classes online. Make sure that you carry a defence device such as a pepper spray for added safety.
4.Avoid Walking Alone
Do not walk alone at night, if you do find yourself having to do so, walk in well-lit busy streets and in a group.
5.Notify Trusted Contacts
Always inform a trusted person of your whereabouts and avoid posting your location or absence from home on social media, as criminals often use these platforms to identify potential targets
Remember, vigilance should extend beyond these tips; staying alert in other areas, such as your vehicle while driving, or using public transportation, whilst in the mall etc. is equally important. Adopting these safety measures and maintaining awareness can help you stay secure and navigate potential dangers more effectively.
