EXCELLERATE SECURITY ALERT

ALERT 1: EXPLOSIVE DEVICE INCIDENTS AT WOOLWORTHS STORES

Excellerate is aware of two separate explosive device incidents that occurred at Woolworths stores in South Africa.

The first incident occurred at approximately 01:00 on 28 May 2026 at Woolworths Menlyn, located within Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Pretoria, Gauteng. An explosive device detonated in or near a shelving unit within a confectionery aisle, causing damage to shelving and stock. No injuries or extensive structural damage were reported.

A second, similar incident occurred during the early hours of 29 May 2026 at Woolworths Food Preller Square, located within Preller Square Shopping Centre, Bloemfontein, Free State. As with the first incident, no injuries were reported.

In both cases, South African Police Service (SAPS) personnel, including specialised explosive ordnance and canine units, were deployed to investigate the incidents and determine whether any secondary devices were present. As of 29 May 2026, no secondary devices had been identified.

The motive for the incidents remains unknown. However, given the similarities between the two events and their occurrence within approximately 24 hours of one another in separate provinces, authorities are investigating the possibility that the incidents may be linked.

Excellerate Response

As a precautionary measure, all Excellerate-managed shopping centres have been placed on high alert. Centre management, security teams and service providers have been advised to maintain heightened vigilance and reinforce existing security measures.

Our Security personnel are being tasked to:

  • Increase patrol visibility throughout centres and surrounding precincts.
  • Pay particular attention to unattended packages, bags or suspicious items.
  • Monitor for suspicious behaviour or individuals conducting unusual surveillance activities.
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity, persons or objects to SAPS and Centre Management.
  • Ensure emergency response procedures and communication channels remain operational and readily accessible.

Threat Assessment

While there is currently no intelligence indicating a direct threat to other Excellerate sites, the occurrence of two similar incidents within a short period suggests a heightened risk of copycat or related incidents. Additional attempts aimed at causing business disruption, property damage or media attention cannot be ruled out.

All mall tenants, contractors and visitors are encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report anything unusual to centre security or management.

ALERT 2: PLANNED TRUCK DRIVER DEMONSTRATIONS – 30 MAY 2026

Information received indicates that South African truck drivers intend embarking on nationwide demonstrations along major transport routes on 30 May 2026.

The planned action is reportedly linked to dissatisfaction regarding the employment of foreign nationals within the Road Freight Industry, as well as concerns relating to the planned implementation of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) Amendment Act from 1 July 2026.

Various Truck Driver associations have expressed support for the planned demonstrations on 20 May 2026. Current reporting also indicates growing anti-foreign national sentiment in parts of South Africa, increasing the potential for higher participation levels than previously observed during similar actions.

Historically, demonstrations by truck driver groups have experienced limited participation and have often remained localised. However, prevailing socio-political conditions may contribute to increased attendance and disruption during the planned action.

Potential Impact

The demonstrations may result in:

  • Traffic congestion and delays along major freight and logistics corridors.
  • Temporary road closures and route diversions.
  • Increased security risks near freight depots, logistics hubs, industrial areas and transport routes.
  • Potential disruption to deliveries, supply chains and contractor movements.
  • Localised protest-related incidents, particularly in industrial and transport-focused areas.

Excellerate Advisory

Clients are advised to:

  • Monitor developments and local intelligence updates throughout 30 May 2026.
  • Review contingency plans for potential transport and delivery disruptions.
  • Advise contractors and service providers to monitor road conditions and avoid protest areas where possible.
  • Maintain communication with local law enforcement
  • Report any protest-related incidents affecting operations to the Excellerate Security Operations Centre immediately.

Threat Assessment

While widespread disruption is not guaranteed, the planned nationwide nature of the demonstrations and the potential involvement of multiple groups increase the likelihood of localised operational disruptions. The overall risk is assessed as Medium, with elevated risk along major freight corridors, logistics nodes and industrial areas.

Excellerate will continue to monitor both situations and provide updates as further information becomes available.
