2024 Election Update

Tensions Rise as New Political Developments Unfold

As the country counts down to the National Party sitting this Friday, 14 June 2024, intriguing developments have emerged. The Government of National Unity (GNU) is gaining momentum as parties move towards collaboration aimed at fostering positive changes. However, not all parties are supportive of this coalition, as evidenced by the MK party's unsuccessful attempt to halt the sitting.

IFP to Join Government of National Unity

In a media briefing held by the IFP on Wednesday, 12 June 2024, the party's leader announced that the IFP will be joining the ANC and the DA in a Government of National Unity (GNU). This move comes amid a complex political landscape marked by economic challenges, social unrest, and efforts to strengthen democratic institutions.

IFP leader, Velenkosini Hlabisa emphasised the need for unity and cooperation to overcome the country's challenges stating that "South Africa stands at a critical juncture, our decision to join the Government of National Unity reflects our commitment to working collaboratively for the betterment of all South Africans."

ANC President and DA leader welcomed the IFP

The ANC's President, Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the IFP's participation as a step toward more inclusive and effective governance. "Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient nation," he said. The DA leader, John Steenhuisen also expressed support, noting that the unity government provides an opportunity to implement reforms that have long been advocated by the opposition.

Analysis and Potential Risks

In KwaZulu Natal, the partnership of the ANC, DA, and IFP presents significant implications for the MK Party, which had been confident in becoming the ruling party in the region. This union might reduce the MK Party's power, making their supporters unhappy, and increase tensions. Furthermore, the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) has rejected MK’s urgent application to stop National Assembly sitting. The decision by the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) might make the MK Party feel unfairly treated, potentially exacerbating the risks previously outlined in the #Election Update. Incident Reports

As of this morning, we are seeing an increase of “typical” sporadic protests, however no unusual or obviously “politically motivated” unrest has been reported. In most places the situation on the ground remains relatively calm.

Assurance from Excellerate Services

As the GNU takes formation, it faces a significant challenge of improving the lives of South Africans. The success of this coalition, involving the ANC, DA, and IFP, will depend on their ability to find common ground and collaborate effectively despite their historical differences.
